When we lost Polaris'
granddam Star without having any direct progeny
within the herd, there was no way Polaris was going
anywhere. Polaris herself is maturing into a very
pretty doe, with the sweetest personality to boot.
She excels in general appearance, having great
strength of bone, excellent set to the rear leg,
width between the hocks and up into the escutcheon,
and one of the strongest shoulder assemblies of the
kid crop. I do wish she were a little more level
about the rump from hips to pins, and that she had
more depth and development to her barrel. However,
she keeps going through growth spurts which I
believe is largely responsible for the gangly teen
look in this one. I will be very interested to watch
this one grow up
Polaris has gone through some
strange growth stages over the last year, which is
why she has yet to see the show ring. However, she
seems to finally be pulling things back together and
is looking better than ever! This one will be slow
to mature into the deep-bodied style of animal that
I like to see, but good things come to those that
wait. Polaris
freshened as an older yearling FF in 2021, and what
can I say but wow! Gorgeous udder, so very well
attached and held high up into her escutcheon that
is productive with lovely texture and milks down to
absolutely nothing. She may be all legs and no depth
right now, but that's okay - she's young! She even
managed to pick up an unrestricted leg at her very
first show out as a milker with ever - 30+ senior
does, a feat made all the more impressive by the
fact that yes, she was still a yearling! She
continued to grow into herself throughout the year,
and ended the show season with a RGCH to her already
likely finished herdmate, Willow. That means that
she should have two out of her three championship
legs! Polaris is one to watch out for as she ages!!
Polaris was one of three
does that was accidentally aborted early on in her
pregnancy in fall 2021. While it was a huge
disappointment not to have her newly fresh for
spring shows, she has continued to milk and is
carrying her extended lactation with incredible ease
considering she is just a first freshener. She
milked over 3000# as a FF in 305 days, and appraised
an exciting 89 in April. I expect that number will
only go up with age! A bit of a bridesmaid at her
only show out this summer going 3X RGCH to other
herdmates, I believe that with a second freshening
she will be a hard one to beat. Watch for her in
2023! |
